The Story Behind Our Baby’s Name (And Tips For Naming Yours)

When we learned that we were going to have a baby boy, we were so ecstatic. It was absolutely exciting to hunt for baby names, especially because we wanted his name to be perfect and meaningful. We picked the name Daniel Nicholas, and we couldn’t have made a better choice.

Origin and meaning

Daniel is actually a Hebrew word which means “God is my judge.” Our son’s name reminds us of the fortitude and strength of the prophet Daniel, an interpreter of dreams who survived a death sentence in a lion’s den because of his steadfast faith in God.

On the other hand, Nicholas is of Greek origin. It means “victory of the people,” and we thought that such a positive but strong name would be perfect for our baby.

Combining the two names together paints a better picture of who we want our baby to be when he grows up: strong and principled, but always aware of the importance of faith. We want him cling on to his dreams while always mindful of others.

Tips in naming your baby

The first advice we can give is to start looking for baby names early. There are a lot of names available, such that it is easy to get overwhelmed by the pressure of choosing a name when the baby has already arrived. Let the experience be stress-free and full of fun by doing it ahead of time.

Always think of your child’s first day in school. You would not want him to be teased, right? Thus, avoid names that sound like or closely resemble your last name. Avoid names that could be the brunt of jokes, too.
