Shopping for newborn clothes and whatnots is an exciting and exhilarating experience. But it can also be quite overwhelming, especially for newbie parents. It is therefore important to come up with a comprehensive checklist that outlines the things that are absolutely essential and those that may be done away with. It is also helpful to compare notes with other mothers. I find it particularly less stressful to check other mom blogs and websites for tips on newborns.
Stick to the basics
Welcoming a baby to the family can put a toll on the family budget if you are not careful with your expenses. For the first few weeks, it would be practical to only buy the basics. Also, other people may give presents; if you buy only the basics, you reduce the chances of buying doubles.
What are these basics? First, you would need a layette and a set of newborn clothes. You would need a special going-home outfit, for the benefit of those who eagerly wait that day when you bring home your baby. Do not forget to buy gentle and scent-free laundry detergent for your baby’s clothes.
Apart from newborn clothes, you may also want to brush up on nursery basics. You would definitely need a crib, a crib mattress, and beddings. Stock up on storage bins, they always come in handy.
Shop according to your baby’s developmental needs
Wise parents are those who perceive their baby’s needs, before the baby even needs them. You can do this by learning about developmental milestones and buying what your baby might need when he reaches that age. For instance, knowing when your baby will start teething will give you advance notice as to when to buy quality but affordable teethers.
Rely upon the grace of others
If you cannot afford to buy a crib or a diaper-changing table yet, fret not. You can always borrow these things from your relatives and friends whose kids have grown up. There is nothing wrong with borrowing, for as long as you ask nicely with every intention to return the things borrowed in the same condition when you borrowed them.
However, try not to borrow very personal items. Diaper cloths, for instance, are not to be passed on from one baby to the next. The key is cleanliness. Diaper cloths that have been previously used may not be as sterile and as clean as you want them to be.
Hand-me-down newborn clothes, on the other hand, are great gifts. This is because babies outgrow their clothes very fast and newborn clothes tend to get worn only a few times and are almost as good as new. Remember to thoroughly wash and sterilize these clothes when you get them.
There are a multitude of newborn tips that parents can use to save money and effort. Just take note that above everything, what is more important than buying newborn clothes is making sure that your precious baby is comfortable and healthy.
